April 2019 • Nebraskaland 41 Top left: Brad Mellema of Grand Island photographs a sharp- tailed grouse lek from a public viewing blind on the Bessey Ranger District of the Nebraska National Forest near Thedford. Left and above: The pair of male sharptails sparring on the previous spread and the grouse on this one were photographed from the same blind. Males stomp their feet and dance in circles, inflating purple air sacs on their necks, in an effort to impress a mate.
