April 2019 • Nebraskaland 47 in the 1920s By History Nebraska De Havilland DH-4 airmail planes at Omaha's Ak-Sar-Ben Field near 60th and Center streets, circa 1922. The DH-4 was a British two-seat light bomber during World War I; the U.S. Army Air Service also used them and the U.S. Postal Service modifi ed them for airmail service. HN RG3882-263-a Albeit brief, the early era of Nebraska's airmail fl ights was known for open-cockpit planes and navigation by landmarks, forced landings and commonplace crashes.
