TAKE 'EM FROGGIN'
If you have young kids and you're not staying up until the
wee hours of the night hand-grabbing frogs this time of the
year, you're missing out. Here's what to expect and what
supplies you'll need.
Bullfrogs will surround the edges of farm ponds and lakes
throughout the state near nightfall. Hunting for them on the
land can be tough because they can be skittish to sounds
behind them – as they will be facing the water – so a small
johnboat or canoe is ideal.
Supplies are simple – life jackets for the kids, a small,
but sturdy butterfly net, insect repellant, a few hand-held
flashlights for scanning the banks, and one spotlight. The
spotlight should be rechargeable in your vehicle by USB or
a 12v outlet.
Shine lights in the frog's eyes as you quietly approach, and
switch back and forth between handgrabbing and using a
net depending on where the frogs are sitting. Rod-and-reel
tactics can also be used near dusk and dawn using floating
scum frog or mouse imitations.
These trips will be dirty, smelly, and laugh-out-loud funny.
And your kids will love them too. Visit the Nebraska Fishing
Guide for more information.
