The
Beauty
of Brown
I
had never really noticed how distinct the changes the seasons
bring to our Nebraska hardwoods and plant life until a November
trip to Florida many years ago.
After several days in the lush landscape of the Sunshine State,
my travel partners and I arrived in Omaha by airplane and set out
toward home on I-80. We were subjected to an incredible contrast of
color to what we had seen just hours before – a landscape primarily
dominated by browns instead of greens.
Towering cottonwoods (above) in Box Butte County take on a new
artistic appeal after their leaves have fallen.
Similar to the surrounding landscape, the camoufl age coat of the
white-tailed deer (opposite) changes with the season. The reddish-
brown hair of spring turns grayish-brown in the winter.
