PORTRAITS FROM THE PAST
These fish were caught on March 25, 1972, at Sioux Lookout Check on NPPD canal using
creek chubs 6 to 8 inches long with #2.0 hooks. They were 8 to 10 pounds and caught in one
hour. My cousin Bob runs a bait shop in North Platte. Granddad had one in the 30s-40s with
his son, who ran Freeze's Bait and Tackle in North Platte – 70 years in the bait business.
– Larry Freeze, North Platte

This picture of Brown County residents was taken near Eddyville, NE, in 1963. Pictured left to right: E.G.
Grooms, Miner Hagen, Merlin "Turk" Beebout and Mel Lacy. Turk, my dad, was a member of the greatest
generation and served in the Pacific Theater during WWII. He passed away in the fall of 2019 at the age of
95. His legacy will include his love for all things Nebraska – hunting, fishing and, of course, the Cornhuskers.
