Rock Creek Station State Historical Park is one of its most popular destinations, which outdoor enthusiasts and history buffs alike will appreciate. See the deep ruts carved by wagons on the Oregon Trail and explore reconstructed buildings modeled after original structures that date back to the 1850s. Then hike along the picturesque Rock Creek and hear the story of how James Butler Hickok, also known as Wild Bill, began his infamous gun-slinging reputation at Rock Creek Station. For more outdoor time, take a trip to Alexandria State Recreation Area where lakes, a swimming beach and great fishing opportunities will provide hours of entertainment. Its Snack Shack is open seasonally. Other interesting stops in Fairbury include the city museum and city park. The museum documents the town's history and hosts a car show every September. The city park features a new aquatic center and a unique wooden playground covered with tall, shady trees. Stop by Rowdy's for lunch, where its huge chicken fried steak called the "elephant ear" could satisfy the most voracious of eaters. Jalisco Mexican Restaurant, located on the square, offers old family recipes and is a local favorite. Hometown Eatery is another lunch or dinner spot with its wide-ranging menu of bakery treats, Reuben sandwiches and pizza. Side Trek Bar and Grill in Harbine hosts a wing night every Thursday. Fairbury is a great place to visit in the summer months. Don't miss the races at the Jefferson County Speedway, where the Jayhusker ¾ Midget Races are a hit during the County Fair in July; over 1,000 fans pack the stands during these two nights of racing. Or catch the Annual Motorcyle Show and then stop in for a drink at the Salty Dog Saloon in Steele City afterward, which offers live music in the summer. Find small-town hospitality at the Nebraska Prairie Rose Bed & Breakfast in Daykin. One of the homes was built in 1917 and fully restored to its former Edwardian-era glory, featuring a beautiful wraparound porch. Or turn in for the night at Grayhouse Inn Bed & Breakfast near downtown, Capri Motel, or Edgewood Hotel and Suites. For nearly 130 years, Jefferson County has served as a meeting place for travelers and explorers. The Oregon Trail began the story and the community has since grown into the diverse destination it is today – perfect for any weekend getaway. See visitnebraska.com for more information.
