BUILDING AN IGLOO-LIKE THING
Last March my kids, their friends and I built an igloo.
Well, not quite an igloo. More like a tall, heavy ice dome-
volcano-type thing.
For more than 10 hours, we filled buckets with snow,
watered them down with a hose (a very imprecise step)
and built our walls. Then we periodically sprayed the entire
structure down with the hose to help freeze everything
together.
Because it was 10 degrees, we followed strict instructions
not to spray each other with the hose, and with a couple of
pizzas thrown into the mix, we had our outdoor activity for
the day.
In the end, we made a fire inside of it, our neighbors
shook their heads in dismay and slight embarrassment,
and every non-participating adult questioned why we
hadn't created a roof.
The other day I asked one of the kids if she was ready to
make an "igloo" again.
"Absolutely. That was so much fun!"
The truly enjoyable part was watching a group of
elementary school students work harder and longer than
I'd ever seen before.
I guess that's what being outside can do for them.
