56 Nebraskaland • May 2020 MIXED BAG By Erin Lenz, Nebraska Tourism Commission YOUR CASS COUNTY TO-DO LIST Editor's Note: Though you may or may not be able to travel right now, Cass County has many great things to see and do. Put these places on your list of places to go in the future. Remember to check all state and local health and travel advisories before making travel plans. Do not travel if you are sick; if you have a fever of 100.4 or greater; if you have knowingly been exposed to a person with COVID-19; or have been to an area with known community spread of the virus. Maintain proper social distancing of at least six feet and follow the 10-person limit rule. Follow good hygiene practices with frequent handwashing. Get out and enjoy Nebraska's outdoors, but do it safely and keep your health in mind. When in Cass County, start at Platte River State Park (see page 30) and its many opportunities, then visit nearby Louisville State Recreation Area. Fish for bass, catfi sh, bluegill and crappie in the area's fi ve sandpit lakes, and don't forget to try out the new fl oating playground. Look for adventure for the whole family right off of I-80 Exit 426. Tour the Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum and experience the fl ight simulator or view their large collection of aircraft and spacecraft. After visiting the museum, head to nearby Eugene T. Mahoney State Park. Explore the park's hiking and biking trails, treetop ropes course and observation tower in the warmer months, and enjoy indoor rock climbing, sledding and ice skating in the winter. This park has activities available year-round. Also off Exit 426 is Lee G. Simmons Conservation Park & Wildlife Safari. From your vehicle, see elk, bison, white-tailed deer and more on this 4-mile, drive-through, North American wildlife experience. Looking for a new activity to try? Try paintball with Mad Cow Paintball near Cedar Creek. Located on a family farm, 40 acres of fun has been set aside exclusively for paintball. Once you've worked up an appetite, try Round the Bend Steakhouse, one of Nebraska's premier steakhouses. For a drink with a view, head to Cellar 426 for a tasting of award- winning Nebraska-crafted wines and beautiful views from the winery terrace. To satisfy a sweet tooth, head to Bakers Candies in Greenwood to shop for those delicious renowned chocolate meltaways and other goodies. Spend a weekend in Cass County and take advantage of the unique overnight accommodations in the area. Try glamping at Slattery Vintage Estates. While there, try Nebraska wine in their tasting room.
