What To Do in November
View and photograph
Harris's sparrows
Early November | Eastern Nebraska
With distinctive black and chestnut
markings, the elegant Harris's sparrow
stands out. Look for this large sparrow
in plum thickets along rural roads or in
brushy areas on the edges of woodlands.
Harris's sparrows respond especially well to
"pishing," or imitating a bird's "psh-psh-psh"
call to draw them out of the brush. If you're
not easily embarrassed, give it a try!
Go waterfowl hunting
in Harlan County
Throughout the month
A stopover for migrating birds, Harlan
County off ers good waterfowl hunting
opportunities. For best success, scout ahead
of time to fi nd where birds are likely to roost
and feed, and set up your decoy spread to
mimic the activity you see. Hunting the
backwater areas of Harlan County Reservoir
may give you an excellent chance at getting
closer to birds.

Go on a scavenger hunt at
Fort Atkinson
Year-round | Fort Atkinson State Historical Park
Even if the fort interior is closed and there's no living history going
on, you can still have a good time exploring Fort Atkinson. The
park's two scavenger hunts, with a history and nature focus, will
take you throughout the grounds looking for answers, watching
videos via QR code, and noticing things you might not otherwise.
Pick up the scavenger hunt sheets at the fort's west gate.
