Outdoor Nebraska
By Renae Blum
It's a mistake to think there's nothing to do outdoors in the
winter. There is, with just a little creativity and a warm coat.
Try any of these activities to get started.
N
Winter bird feeding
Throughout the month | Statewide
Food is scarcer for birds in the winter, so give them a boost with a backyard bird
feeder or two. Black oil sunfl ower seeds, peanut kernels, white proso millet and
Niger thistle are all great options, but you can experiment to see what type of
feed works best in your area. Providing a source of open water also is a great
way to attract birds.
Ice-fi shing at
Frye Lake
As ice conditions allow
Nebraska's Sandhills lakes are generally
great ice-fi shing destinations, and Frye
Lake is one of the best right now with
good numbers of quality panfi sh and lots
of bass. As with any ice-fi shing outing,
a good strategy is to keep moving and
cutting holes until you fi nd the fi sh.
