30 Nebraskaland • January-February 2021 Outdoor Nebraska By Renae Blum Don't let cabin fever get to you. There are still plenty of ways to have fun outdoors and stay active; here are just a few. N Squirrel hunting Through Jan. 31 | Statewide Winter can be one of the most fun and rewarding times to hunt Nebraska's fox squirrels. Get outside on a calm, sunny day with family and friends to make memories and bring home meat for delicious squirrel stew. Be stealthy, as squirrels look for movement. Ice-fi shing at Merritt Reservoir As weather conditions allow Merritt Reservoir is a traditional ice-fi shing favorite, with a variety of species that provide good action, including crappie and other panfi sh, large catfi sh, walleye and perhaps pike or muskie. Crappie is the No. 1 draw and for good reason: The reservoir has always had a good population of larger crappie.
