Pictured are Rex VanSkiver, left, and his son, Max VanSkiver, at their farmstead east of Davenport. The bucks
were harvested along the Republican River, south of Red Cloud, on opening day of rifle season in 1965.
My grandpa, Rex, introduced me to deer hunting as soon as I was old enough to obtain a permit. I was
immediately hooked and haven't missed a season since. My dad, Max, and I hunt together every year. I have
been fortunate enough to harvest deer with both rifles in the photo. The Remington Woodsmaster 740 that Rex
is holding resides in my gun safe. My uncle has possessionof the Winchester Model 1894 that Max is holding.
