April 2021 • Nebraskaland 109
ABOVE: The red crossbill is nomadic
in fall and winter; its numbers
are variable and unpredictable.
This species is a common regular
visitor in the west and uncommon
elsewhere.
RIGHT: Ospreys are slowly increasing
as a breeding species in Nebraska,
and it is expected that they will
continue to increase and expand
their range. It is an uncommon
regular spring and fall migrant
statewide and a rare regular breeder
in the west and west-central.
OPPOSITE: Regular breeding of
mountain bluebirds occurs in open
pine woodlands associated with
areas of high relief in the Panhandle.
