60 Nebraskaland • August-September 2021 Pheasant Hunting Near Palmyra 1963. Opening day of pheasant hunting I hunted on my uncle's farm southwest of Palmyra. I was 16 years old and that is my dad's vizsla, Zipp, with me. One of our best hunting buddies was Carl Wolfe, who worked for the Game and Parks Commission. We hunted together until the mid-1990s, especially grouse at Halsey and quail around Inavale. Ken Bouc did an article on Dad and I and our dogs quail hunting in the December 1990 issue of Nebraskaland. – Steve Stedman, Beatrice, Nebraska Send contributions to: Portraits from the Past, Nebraskaland Magazine, P.O. Jim Scherbarth and son, Atone, of Hay Springs, myself, and nephew, Kelly Schafer of Evansville, Wyoming (currently). All really nice mule deer taken Northwest of Hay Springs that fall. – Tim Scherbarth, Hay Springs, Nebraska Coyote Pups 1938. My dad (Henry Petersen) and myself probably taken in the spring of 1938 on our farm northwest of Auburn. Dad and a neighbor, Henry Rogge, had come across a coyote den and dug it up. They brought the six pups home so we could see them. Dad is holding three of them, and I have the other three on my lap in the wagon. The pups were remarkably calm and didn't struggle as long as we kept our hands on them and didn't make any fast moves. – Loren Petersen Green, Valley Center, California Hunting West of Elgin in the 1980s. My younger brother Doug Buffington (pictured left) and myself with a pair of prairie chickens we shot back in the '80s near Elgin, Nebraska. – Alan Buffington, Fort Collins, Colorado
