October 2021 • Nebraskaland 31 What To Do in October View bats Throughout the month Statewide Bats get a bad rap, but they're actually benefi cial, allowing farmers to use less pesticide because of the number of pests they eat. This month, appreciate them. Head outside and wait patiently until just after the sun sets. Watch for something that makes fast turns and beats its wings rapidly — it's probably a bat! ERIC FOWLER, NEBRASKALAND Hunt for edible mushrooms at Indian Cave Throughout the month Indian Cave State Park With good rainfall and tree diversity, Indian Cave State Park is a great place to hunt mushrooms. Search for hen-of-the-woods and chicken of the woods, which both like oak trees, and oyster mushrooms, which grow on a variety of hardwood trees year-round in this park. For help with identifi cation, check out Mushrooms of the Midwest by Michael Kuo and Andrew S. Methven.
