60 Nebraskaland • October 2021 Ice Fishing 1984. What started as a winter camping experience for my family and friends morphed into a 40-plus-year fishing tradition. Early ice derbies were held on area lakes. Area dam sites and Hanson's Lake near LaPlatte were popular as well. For a time, good friend Bazil Lazure hosted the event at his place on Beaver Lake. For the past 10 years, we returned to Hanson's thanks to the gracious hospitality of George and Patti Flott. The winner takes home a 5-gallon bucket full of prizes. Pictured left is me and right is Phil Franco as we prepare our ice gear for the event. – Bob Hladik Sr., Omaha PORTRAITS FROM THE PAST Send contributions to: Portraits from the Past, Nebraskaland Magazine, P.O. As a high school kid from Dodge in the 1960s, I used to drive to Dead Timber State Recreation Area to fish. One day while fishing for crappie from a small boat, a bullfrog swam out and took my red and white bobber in its mouth, and then it swam back to shore. This happened a number of times so I started fishing for them. There were so many bullfrogs at Dead Timber. This is a picture of success. The best part was the taste of Mom's frog leg dinner. – Dr. Dave Mlnarik, Elkhorn
