View common loons at Lake McConaughy Throughout the month Western Nebraska Common loons are large diving water birds with long bodies and short tails. Their long dagger-like beaks are used for foraging in the water, and these birds often will breed on quiet, remote freshwater lakes. Be on the lookout for this beautiful-sounding bird this month.
