58 Nebraskaland • December 2021 PORTRAITS FROM THE PAST Pike Fishing at Pelican Lake, 1984. Our sons Wyatt, age 7, and Dustin, age 5, ice fishing on Pelican Lake at the Valentine National Wildlife Refuge. Our sons became Eagle Scouts and enjoyed many adventures camping, fishing and duck hunting. We traveled to Chadron State Park and Fort Robinson State Park several times as our sons grew up. At Chadron State Park, they first discovered fireflies in the evening. I always had to bring empty jars for collecting all sorts of specimens. Wyatt's interest in insects led him to achieve a doctorate in entomology and become an invasive species specialist. Dustin continues to have an adventurous spirit and loves camping, downhill biking, hiking and traveling in Nebraska's great outdoors. – Doyce Williams, North Platte Pheasant Hunting near Wausa, 1999. Pheasant hunting with my son and two buddies in Wausa, Nebraska, October 1999. Pictured left to right: Lyle Rorvik, Wausa; myself, Elkhorn; my son, Will; and Mike O'Kane, Elkhorn. We have enjoyed many pheasant hunts in my home town of Wausa. – Neil Kirby, Elkhorn
