As he sometimes did with hard-to-photograph species, Farrar built enclosures (left) to capture images. For example, Farrar
captured this Bailey's eastern woodrat (Neotoma fl oridana baileyi) and photographed it at the Niobrara Valley Preserve in 2006.
Legend has it that Farrar, in 1999, captured this image of a
least weasel in an enclosure he built in his basement, even
leaving a window open to let the snow blow in.
"One of two species of garter snakes common statewide in
Nebraska, the red-sided garter snake (Thamnophis sirtalis)
is most abundant near streams, ponds and marshes,"
wrote Farrar in 2002. "Its principal foods are frogs, toads,
salamanders, fi sh, tadpoles and earthworms. Its name
comes from its striped pattern, which was similar to the
fancy garters men once wore to support their stockings."
