PORTRAITS FROM THE PAST
Mixed Bag, Wisner, early 1960s.
My father, Carl Brasee, in the backyard of his in-laws in
Wisner in the early 1960s. This mixed bag was likely taken in
northeastern Cuming County on my grandfather's farm. The
black Lab is the first of several — always named Lucky. Dad
learned his hunting, fishing and outdoor pursuits as an adult
and is an avid outdoorsman. He is an accomplished shot with
both rifle and shotgun. Waterfowl hunting is his passion. He
also always out-fishes us with a fly rod. He turned 90 last May.

Pheasant Hunting in Boone County, 1983.
Opening day of pheasant season in 1983 at the
farm where I grew up in Boone County. Back row
left to right: Me, Gary Lee; my younger brother,
Merlin Lee; Sye Munson; Kent Lee. Front row left to
right: my older brother, Duane Lee; Ron Laux; Terry
Munson. Ron was a teacher and football coach at
Albion High School, and Terry was a teacher. We
had 21 pheasants by 10:30 a.m. I enjoy reading your
magazine.

Coyotes, Northeast of Pierce, early 1950s.
This is a picture of my dad, John Wesemann, and me, Willie
Wesemann, taken in the early 1950s. We used smoke to get
these young coyotes out of a large pipe. At this time the
county or state paid a bounty for them. It was a large litter.
I still live on the home place, have for 76 years, northeast
of Pierce, Nebraska. I still hunt and fish. I have enjoyed
Nebraskaland for many years. I also enjoy taking young people
hunting and fishing.

Waterfowl hunting near Tekamah, 1963.
This picture is of my dad, Harry Newill, of
Oakland, and my grandpa, Jess Newill, of Lyons. The
year was 1963. They were hunting ducks, geese and
pheasants at Lake Quinnebaugh, which was 12 miles
from Tekamah. Dad has his faithful Chesapeake Bay
retriever, Pepper, who was an amazing hunting dog!
