PORTRAITS FROM THE PAST
Rabbit hunting, 1969
This photo was taken on our family farm near Poole
in December 1969 of Bob and Dale Luce. Dale lives in
Columbus.
Every year, I travel to Nebraska to hunt pheasants in
the fall and during a normal year, turkeys in the spring.

Pheasant hunting, 1976
This is my older brother, David Houtwed, who was so good with
a rifle and shotgun his nickname was "Rifleman" when he was in
high school. These two roosters were just a few that flushed at
the wrong time. I've watched him shoot many skeet out of the air
with his .22 rifle. It was not uncommon to see David hit coyotes
on the run with his 25-06 at 400-500 yards. I would not trade the
days I spent hunting with him for anything you could give me. We
grew up in Ruskin where the hunting was plentiful, and we never
missed a chance to bag pheasants, quail, coyotes and deer as we
looked forward to the seasons like a great Husker fan waited for
football.
