May 2023 • Nebraskaland 61 Deer hunting near Alma, 1982 My dad, Charles Small, lived in Alma and loved to hunt and fish. In 1982 he took his grandsons Denny and Mick deer hunting. The photo shows that it was a success. Denny lives in Kearney and Mick in Hastings. They are my nephews. Dad bagged his last deer in 1986 when he was 80. – Gary Small, Vermillion, South Dakota First deer, 1963 This is a photo of my dad, Wyman, and me taken in 1963. First deer taken for both of us! We were hunting in Nance County, near Palmer. These two mule deer does were taken on the last day of the season. Back then, it was buck only, but you were allowed to shoot a doe on the last day. I shot mine with a new Model 70 .270 Winchester and dad was shooting a standard, un-altered 1903 Springfield 30-06 service rifle. – Steve Stedman, Beatrice
