64 Nebraskaland • June 2023 PORTRAITS FROM THE PAST Duck Hunting near York, 1985 My dad, Tom Cox, taught me to love the great outdoors at a young age. Our time together spent building our duck blinds and watching the sun come up in the mornings over the decoys are priceless to me. He displayed extreme patience after he introduced me to a duck call at a young age, and I struggled to learn it and often overcalled the birds. He passed away a few years ago now, but as I often reflect on so many of the life lessons he taught me, many of them were centered around our time together in the field. I am forever grateful to my dad for getting me outdoors with him and all the memories we shared in Nebraska and South Dakota hunting together and with family and friends. – Chris Cox, Oro Valley, Arizona Two Rivers trout lake, circa 1984 My sons, Greg and Bob Hladik, Jr. — nice catch for junior anglers. Today, Greg is an Omaha firefighter/paramedic. Bob is the sales manager for a beer distributorship in Missouri. – Bob Hladik, Sr., Omaha Send contributions to: Portraits from the Past, Nebraskaland Magazine, P.O. Hunting near Agate, early 1900s My grandfather, John Wesley Warren, center bottom row, with brothers and neighbors near Agate, Nebraska. He, along with seven brothers and sisters, homesteaded on the flats south of Agate. Hunting provided meat for their family and some to sell. – Jim Warren, Gretna
