JENNY NGUYEN-WHEATLEY, NEBRASKALAND Late-season deer hunting Season dates vary | Statewide Things get more challenging in the late period for deer hunting, but don't put your gear away yet; just readjust your strategy. Tracks are much easier to see in the snow, so use that to your advantage. Hunt late afternoons when deer are more likely to feed this time of year. Also, fi nd places where deer will move out of high winds. For more tips, search "Tips for late-season deer hunting" at NebraskalandMagazine.com. JULIE GEISER, NEBRASKALAND Put out suet for birds Fall through spring | Statewide Suet is a high-fat food that provides the extra calories birds need in colder weather. A variety of species love this protein- packed off ering, including northern fl ickers and downy, hairy and red-bellied woodpeckers. Hang suet in a visible area near shrubs and trees. You can buy suet cakes — or make your own — and place them in a metal suet cage. JUSTIN HAAG, NEBRASKALAND
