26 Nebraskaland • July 2024 Pick wild raspberries Time frame varies; usually starts late June in the south and early July in the north| Eastern third of Nebraska and the northern tier of counties across the state Next to wild strawberries, wild raspberries are Nebraska's tastiest wild fruit. Found on a thorny shrub, wild raspberry grows in partial shade on the edge of woodlands, fence lines or road ditches. They ripen from a whitish-green to red to a dark purple; harvest them in the latter stage. This is a good activity to enjoy while you're out doing other activities, like fi shing or hiking. LEXI CHRISTENSEN Outdoor Nebraska By Renae Blum It's summer — and the outdoors is calling. Have you ever been to a bioblitz or foraged for wild raspberries? Try something new this month, and bring the family! N Fish for white bass and wipers at Harlan Reservoir Anytime in July; peak time is usually late July and August | Harlan County Reservoir Harlan is full of white bass and wipers right now — in fact, it's one of the best spots in the state for both. Anglers can expect to see wipers up to and over 20 inches, and white bass up to and over 15 inches. Most white bass and wiper fi shing is done from a boat — though shoreline fi shing is possible, too. Fisheries biologist Daryl Bauer advises keeping a little distance and casting to the fi sh, rather than roaring right into the middle of them. Also, look for the gulls; they'll be feeding where the fi sh are located. JENNY NGUYEN-WHEATLEY, NEBRASKALAND
