16 Nebraskaland • August-September 2024 Bullets will travel downrange at steel targets of chickens, rams, turkeys and pigs at the 48th annual Nebraska Youth Smallbore Silhouette Invitational on Sept. 28. The youth .22 competition is set in the rolling hills of Pressey Wildlife Management Area, where young shooters from across the state will participate for free. Established in 1977, this competition is the longest-running organized youth shooting event in Nebraska. The competition is open to all youth ages 11 and older who have successfully completed Hunter Education and have not yet graduated high school. Shooters are grouped into classes according to age, rifle weight, sight type and experience level. They may compete individually or as part of a team. The competition consists of 40 rounds fired in two five-round stages at silhouette targets at 40, 60, 77 and 100 meters. Competitors must shoot their rifle unsupported at each steel silhouette target. The event is lauded for its family- friendly atmosphere and the camaraderie among youth and their families and friends. Pressey WMA is located 17 miles south of Broken Bow in Custer County. For more information about this event, contact Matthew Haumont at 308-527-3403 or nebraskasilhouette@gmail.com.
