24 Nebraskaland • October 2024 Outdoor Nebraska By Renae Blum Make time this month to experience the beauty of fall, from changing leaves to hunting seasons, great fi shing opportunities and state park events. N Duck hunt the High Plains Season dates vary by zone | Western Nebraska Waterfowl hunting in Nebraska is almost a religion, and October sees the regular season open in all four of the state's duck zones. This month can be a great time to witness the early migrating prairie ducks that can include gadwall, teal, ring- necks, wigeon and even some early mallards. Spending time scouting and fi nding the hidden water holes is key this time of the year. A good number of camo-clad hunters will make the pilgrimage to the High Plains area of western Nebraska each year; Clear Creek Wildlife Management Area, with more than 6,100 acres, has room to explore. Be aware of special boundaries and hunting areas that come into play in November. JULIE GEISER, NEBRASKALAND Experience Halloween Haunt at Johnson Lake Oct. 12, 1-7 p.m. | Johnson Lake State Recreation Area Enjoy Halloween fun of all kinds at a beautiful park.
