PORTRAITS FROM THE PAST
Pheasant hunting near Lyman, 1970
Sometime around 1970. Lyman, Nebraska. From left: brothers Bruce and Brad; my dad, Bob Bode; brother Barry and me. A
good haul of pheasants and a Canada goose. In western Nebraska in the '70s, a goose was a real prize. Great hunting in those
days — lots of weeds, sugarbeet fields and standing corn.

Catfishing at Logan Creek, 1974
Taken in Bancroft likely summer 1974 after a
good channel cat wading session in Logan Creek
(the Dredge). Randy Schilling (right) married
Gail Brandes (center) and went on to his career
with the Game Commission in Plattsmouth.
Brother Bill Schilling (15 here) is now retired in
Ohio, wading for smallmouth and an occasional
cat. In the '70s, we waded and cast minnows
or crawdads, with a small splitshot, for great
success at dusk and into the night.
