Outdoor Nebraska

Soak in the last of autumn by spending time outdoors — whether
that's in a deer stand, hiking at a beautiful park or trying your
luck with fi shing.

Hike at Ash Hollow State Historical Park
Throughout the year | Near Lewellen
Walk paths that have been traveled for thousands of years — from Indigenous
peoples to pioneers on the Oregon and California trails. Be prepared for a
challenge, though; several trails are steep. One of them, the paved Windlass
Hill trail, will reward you with the sight of swales, or depressions, left by wagon
ruts. The River Overlook Trail off ers an impressive view of the North Platte
River Valley and is a great spot for birdwatching. Twelve miles of trail are
available; bring a comfortable pair of hiking boots and a cell phone in case of
emergency.

Gather wild rose hips
All winter; generally October into spring
Throughout the state
The hip, or fruit, of the wild rose is an excellent
source of Vitamin C and can be made into tea, jams,
jellies, syrup and more. For most uses, you will need
to fi rst split each hip open and remove the hairs and
seeds; a baby-food spoon works well. Avoid plants
that have been sprayed or grow along heavily used
roads. For recipes and more information, see Wild
Seasons: Gathering and Cooking Wild Plants of the
Great Plains by Kay Young.
