Outdoor Nebraska
By Renae Blum
For Nebraskans, May is a time of year when it's easy to be
excited about spending time outdoors. Here are a few ways to
use that time.
N
Forage for wild
asparagus
Late April through May; prime
time is mid- to late-May
statewide
Boasting a fresher, more vibrant
fl avor, wild asparagus is a popular
spring edible in Nebraska. It prefers
sunny, moist spots near water in
rich saline or alkaline soil. Try
searching irrigation canals, ditches,
waterways, roadsides, fencerows
and pastures or meadows — even
old homesteads or farmsteads.
Always get landowner permission
and remember foraging for
wild asparagus isn't permitted
at Nebraska Game and Parks
properties. Search "Stalking
Wild Asparagus" at Magazine.
