N Kayak at a beautiful southwestern park Spring and summer best times | Red Willow State Recreation Area, located 11 miles north of McCook This summer, explore one of southwestern Nebraska's best parks for kayaking. Red Willow State Recreation Area off ers more than 1,600 acres of water, along with striking views and three secluded coves to explore. "As you paddle along, you're tucked into what feels like a large canyon," said regional park supervisor Tyler Francisco. "You kind of forget that you're in Nebraska." Kayak fi shing is popular, too. Launch from one of three boat ramps or the sandy day-use beach area. JULIE GEISER, NEBRASKALAND Celebrate National Bison Month Throughout July | Statewide July is National Bison Month — a fantastic opportunity to celebrate America's national mammal, the American bison. In Nebraska, these large, beautiful animals help support prairie ecosystems through the wallows they create by rolling and lying on the ground. Take the opportunity to view bison this month at places like Fort Robinson State Park, Pioneers Park Nature Center in Lincoln, the Crane Trust Nature and Visitor Center near Alda, Wildlife Safari Park near Ashland or Niobrara Valley Preserve in Brown County.
