28 NEBRASKAland • JUNE 2014 JUNE 2014 • NEBRASKAland 29 A short country drive off of Highway 75 west of Tekamah, Summit Lake is an area with enough for the whole family – or the solo angler looking for a few hours of time on the water a short distance away from Lincoln, Omaha or beyond. ■ T o be able to float a canoe, kayak or bass boat is the best of all worlds for anglers, and Summit accomplishes that very goal. With 190 acres of water, boat anglers can access deep wooded structure, points, rip-rap and shallow vegetation-covered coves for largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie and channel catfish. Bank anglers also have it good, with 15 breakwater jetties spread around the lake and deep water within casting distance of each. Grass edges also line the majority of the lake, making wading a viable option as well. But the area is more than a fishing destination. A swim beach, hiking trail and picnic areas make Summit one of the region's most captivating hotspots. Plus, the area recently got even better with the addition of the Bob Eckdahl Campground in the summer of 2013. The campground, built in honor of Summit's former park superintendent, features electrical hookups and camping pads to make this great destination even greater. Ice fishing remains popular at Summit Lake because of its underwater structure ideal for vertical jigging for various species, including largemouth bass.
