Beyond the
Bagshot
I
t's an oft-repeated notion that anglers fish for
everything but the fish – that the sights and sounds
away from the water draw us back again and again.
Well, it's a little white lie for sure. Show me an angler
who never pulls a fish from the water and I'll show you a
future golfer.
But there does remain some truth with this notion, that
it's the peripheral of our passion that actually makes
fishing such great time spent. For while I spend a minute
or two showing friends photographs of my biggest fish
after each trip, the discussion always detours to what else
I saw during my trip.
From watching a snapping turtle that
is a better angler than me to a loon
trying to keep its chick away from the
same pike I'm looking for, days on the
water have little to do with the fish
anglers are trying to catch – as long as a
selfless fish can allow itself to be hooked
every once in a while.
