The up to three-fourth inch long fruits
ripen in June and July in a succession
of colors from green to white to red to
purplish-black, though ripe fruits are
occasionally white. The name "white"
mulberry refers either to the white
immature fruits or the sometimes white
mature fruits.

That July morning, I froze my
berries in zip-close bags. For several
days afterward, I added a handful of
fresh picked berries to the batter of
