58 NEBRASKAland • JULY 2015 Send contributions to: Portraits from the Past, NEBRASKAland Magazine, P.O. Box 30370, Lincoln, NE 68503-0370. Or e-mail to Tim.Reigert@Nebraska.gov. Photos should show people enjoying Nebraska outdoor activities, such as camping, boating, hunting or fishing, and must have been taken before 1980. We will give priority to unusual photos or activities. When possible, please include a story about the photograph and identify the people, places and approximate date it was taken. Photos will be returned. This old photo was taken in December of 1957 after squirrel hunting on my brother-in-law's farm south and east of Nebraska City. In those days we hunted mostly squirrels, rabbits and quail as there were not many pheasants in southeast Nebraska. The canyon-like woodlands there with their oak trees were very different than the woodlands on the farm east of Greenwood where I grew up. In the picture from left to right are my brother- in-law, Lloyd Cook (deceased); my brothers – Fred, Don, Ray, and Chuck; and myself. My oldest brother, John (deceased) took the picture. – Roger Hammer, Lincoln, Nebraska ▲ This photo was taken in November of 1979. In the photo, Rudolph Pavlik Jr., proudly shows off his trophy from that deer season, taken west of Verdigre. This is just one of many memories from the almost 50 years of hunting at "The Shack." I wasn't born yet at the time of this photo, but I did have the pleasure to hunt with Junior when I was a young boy. What a great experience it was every time! I would've loved to hear the conversation about the cart used to haul this deer (as you can see in the photo it was in tip-top shape). The one thing I will always remember about him is how genuine he was. Even though Junior is no longer with us, we know that he watches over us every hunting season at "The Shack!" – Justin Stark Syracuse, Nebraska ▲
