62 NEBRASKAland • JULY 2015 W hen NEBRASKAland produced Beautiful Nebraska last year, an exceptional compilation of photos representing the state's scenic and natural attributes, we received many accolades from readers. One letter about our special edition wasn't entirely complimentary, however. A line in our publication stated that Nebraska has no mountain views, but has countless other scenic attributes. The reader pointed out in his letter that we do have mountain views. On a clear day from the right spot, observers can see Laramie Peak in Wyoming (bottom photo) and Harney Peak in South Dakota (top), he noted. In October I stumbled upon both of those views while photographing other subjects. I was riding shotgun with a rancher through his pasture near Harrisburg in western Banner County when he pointed westward to Laramie Peak, which at 10,276 feet of elevation is the most prominent point in the Laramie Range. And, I was stalking elk with a rancher in northwestern Sheridan County last fall when he directed my attention to Harney Peak, which is the highest natural point in the Black Hills and South Dakota at 7,242 feet. So, yes, we stand corrected. Nebraska does have mountain views. Really, when it comes to beauty, there's not much Nebraska doesn't have. Justin Haag April 22, 2015 Nebraska: Home of Mountain Views
