A female northern harrier (above)
and its day old chick at a nest in the
prairie pothole region of North Dakota.
Working with biologists, I placed a small
remote camera at the nest that I could
trigger with a walkie-talkie remote from
a distance away. I sat in an L. L. Rue
portable blind (right) from 100 yards
away watching the harrier hunt wetlands
and bring food back to the nest. It would
feed about three times a day. Each time it
descended into the grass I knew it was at
the nest and I would fire off a few frames.
