24 NEBRASKAland • OCTOBER 2015
ABOVE: Hardstem bulrush is
abundant in the shallows of
Big Alkali. A hard sand bottom,
moderate alkalinity, and the
presence of invasive carp allow few
species of aquatic plants to survive
in the lake.
RIGHT: A first year rosette of
fourpoint evening-primrose grows
prostrate on the loose, dry sands
of the upper beach. This beautiful,
yellow-flowered biennial is found
in sandy habitats over much of the
state.
OPPOSITE: Hardstem bulrush
remains green well into autumn,
harvesting the last rays of the
lowering sun.
