By Lindsay Rogers Although the fossil record indicates there were previously many members of the Antilocapridae family, the pronghorn is now the only living member. It is endemic to North America and is found throughout the western United States. Pronghorns are known for their speed; they can reach speeds of 60 mph when sprinting. They can maintain long- distance speeds of 40 mph. Although the cheetah is faster when sprinting, it cannot match the pronghorn's sustained running stamina or speed. ■ A Mammal Brief Pronghorn Lindsay Rogers is an outdoor education specialist with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.
