62 NEBRASKAland • JULY 2016 Coves, like this one on the south shore of the north arm, are valuable nursery areas for juvenile fish. This cove was a shallow drainage from the uplands before excavation and rock riprap protection was added. This multipurpose breakwater constructed on the old Cornhusker Road base provides Prairie Queen wave protection, fish habitat and angler access to deep water. Werner Park, home to the Omaha Storm Chasers baseball team, can be seen in the background. Pictured is the primary outlet structure, located on the dam of Prairie Queen, that is extremely valuable to manipulate the reservoir's water levels in an effort to enhance fish habitat when needed.
