66 NEBRASKAland • MARCH 2017
I
n the January/February issue of NEBRASKAland Magazine, Julie Geiser wrote a story entitled "A Year
Outdoors" that we knew would spark immediate debate among readers for those outdoor pursuits we failed to
include in that article. What I didn't realize is how quickly I would forget the simplest message of all for the
coming months that this piece regarded – get outside and do something. Anything.
I was reminded of this while going through photos from March of 2016. I knew I would come across fishing
photos and wasn't disappointed, immediately uncovering trips for both farm pond crappies and Two Rivers State
Recreation Area put-and-take trout, but what I forgot about was my family trip to Fontenelle Forest and their
annual Fairy Faire event.
I couldn't help but laugh at the photos of bright and colorful "fairies" walking through
these eastern Nebraska woodlands giving flower petals to children along the way, and the
very Blair Witch-like fairy houses that my children, as well as a host of other kids, were
making with fallen branches and leaves.
It was one of those perfectly gloomy, yet oh-so-bright, March days that I look forward to
every year, where the possibilities remain endless for finding something to do in nature.
