Spring Wildflowers of the Tallgrass Prairie Photos and story by Gerry Steinauer, Botanist The first tallgrass wildflower to emerge from its winter slumber is the prairie fawn lily (Erythronium mesochoreum). As early as late March, when snow and cold still threaten, fully-formed, bell-shaped flowers push through the soil, followed by two fleshy leaves. This increasingly uncommon wildflower is found only in our southeastern counties. 24 NEBRASKAland • APRIL 2017
