PHOTO BY JEFF KURRUS Spring Turkey Hunting Shotgun season starts April 15 Statewide Nebraska boasts not only the best turkey hunting in the country, but also one of the longest seasons in the nation, with archery and shotgun seasons closing May 31. Turkeys can be found in every county of the state, and hunters will find good turkey opportunities on more than 500,000 acres of public and public-access land in Nebraska. APRIL 2017 • NEBRASKAland 33 Nebraska Sesquicentennial Events Throughout the month Statewide Nebraska turned 150 in March, and celebrations are ongoing throughout the year. This month, head to Tekamah on April 15 for the Spring Fling, the largest Easter egg hunt in Nebraska. If you enjoy art, visit the Art of the American West and the Wild Spaces exhibits at the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, and check out the Nebraska State Quilt Guild's NE150 Quilt Competition display in Seward. PHOTO BY JEFF KURRUS Morel Mushroom Hunting Late April Statewide It's time once again for that most treasured of scavenger hunts: morel mushroom season. Good locations include recently burned woods, moist wooded areas near dying or dead elm or ash trees, old apple orchards, timbered areas along rivers and streams, and sunny, south-facing slopes.
