PORTRAITS FROM THE PAST
Pheasant hunting near Cumro, 1985
I am from Indiana and graduated from Kearney State College in 1984. I returned to Nebraska the following winter to hunt
pheasants and waterfowl. That was, to this day, one of the greatest weeks of hunting I have ever experienced. My yellow
Labrador, Beauregard, was 8 months old at the time and grew up fast, but for some reason our dogs did not make the photo.
Pictured back at "the ranch" south of Kearney with a 15-bird limit we shot in snow-covered milo fields is, from left, Ev Terrell,
myself, Mike Lothamer and Todd Glandt, with Jay Westesen taking the photograph.

Walleye fishing near Lexington, 1983
Pictured is my good buddy, Grant Wood, from Lincoln.
We both decided to skip work on a Friday in May and make
it a three-day weekend to fish Johnson Lake near Lexington
where my dad, Wilbur Simmons, owned a place on the lake.
The three of us went out in my dad's boat and fished the
"hump," an old roadbed, in Johnson. We caught several nice
walleyes on little Joe spinners and nightcrawlers. Although
40 years later, we still fish together.
