30 Nebraskaland • May 2026 Outdoor By Jeff Kurrus The most difficult part about May is deciding what to do. From all parts of the state this month the outdoors calls in so many directions. Just make sure you listen. N Visit an Invasive Species Event May | Select Locations Choose from events during Invasive Species Week May 24-30. On May 27, take a break from your outdoor activities and compete in the Invasive Species Online Trivia event 6-8 p.m CDT. Using Zoom and Menti, trivia will be conducted by Nebraska's invasive species experts. On May 28, join the Invasive Species Trivia and Wine Tasting event at Billy's restaurant in Lincoln 5:30-7:30 p.m. All ages are welcome with non-alcoholic options. Tickets are $20 and pre-registration is required. On May 30, attend Know Your Invasives Day at Schramm Education Center 12-3 p.m. Designed for all ages, this educational event includes a guided nature hike, zebra mussel scavenger hunt and live filming of Backyard Farmer. JENNY NGUYEN-WHEATLEY, NEBRASKALAND Get to a Bluegill Bed May | Statewide Bluegill beds are prime locations for catching gillies this month. Big, colorful males will be guarding eggs deposited by females and will strike at a variety of lures and baits — from popping bugs casted from a fly rod to a worm and bobber. Beds can be found in shallow water and are often visible right beneath the surface. Catch fish on the outer beds first before working into shallower water.
