In this issue celebrating Nebraskaland Magazine's 100th year in print, there are several things
you won't learn about.
You won't see every beautiful park and place in Nebraska, nor will you learn about all the
hunters, anglers and other conservationists who continue to protect this state's natural
resources.
You won't hear from the long list of people who work behind the scenes to continue to make
this publication thrive.
You also won't hear the greatest campfire story I've ever been told.
What you will learn is our history, from the story behind the thousands of pictures we've
published, to the art, parks and conservation messages we have featured. You'll see portraits
from our past, learn about the transition from Outdoor Nebraska to Nebraskaland, and
understand how important this publication has been for so many readers.
We know it is important when we meet people like Jake Reinders, the co-owner of Grandpa's Woods
Golf Course near Murdock. While playing a round there with my son last fall, Reinders stopped
when he saw me, pointing at my chest.
"Are you from Nebraskaland?" he asked, reading the logo on my pullover.
I told him I was and, with his index finger in the air, he asked me to wait
for just a moment and disappeared.
Minutes later, he returned with a picture frame in his hand. It was a copy
of the July 1968 cover and the pages from a story about the golf course
published that year. Although it was nearly 60 years later, he couldn't
have been prouder.
We encounter people like this often. Some people we meet are part of
families who have been reading Nebraskaland for generations. Some
become lifelong friends.
Because the messages we convey are important. Spending time outdoors is time well spent. There
are beautiful places in Nebraska that you need to see. And we want to continue building an outdoor
community with every single one of you.
We do that because the place we live is so special.
We do that because we're Nebraskaland.
