June 2026 • Nebraskaland 33 WHAT TO DO IN JUNE Fish the Sandhills Summer 1950 " F I S H N U M E RO U S. . . A N G L E R S SCARCE ... In Sand Hills" read the title of a 1950 Outdoor Nebraska article. "Have you ever had the desire to go fishing some place where there were both too many fish and too few anglers to catch them?" As much as Nebraskaland Magazine has promoted the Valentine National Wildlife Refuge as other-worldly — both topographically and fishing-wise — our photographers rarely see these lakes overloaded with anglers. Now is the time to take your vehicle down a two-track Jeep trail for the summer fishing adventure of your life. Capture a Winning Photo June 1970 Nebraskaland Magazine announced its first photo contest: "Start shooting and bag a prize." In October, we will begin accepting images for the 2026 photo contest, so start shooting now. Outdoor recreation is at its height in June. Look for unique compositions and light to move yourself to the front of the prize line. While a bag shot of a kid holding a fish is cute, an image of that same kid drenched in golden, end-of-the-day light against a gorgeous backdrop is what we're looking for. Shoot a Muzzleloader June 1980 "This scene might have been from 150 years ago as buck-skinner display arms, tipi and other paraphernalia connected with the ir sport," noted a c o v e r c a p t i o n b y Ke n B o u c o n muzzleloader shooting. Whether you're a longtime shooter, a history buff or just curious, attend the Fort Hartsuff State Historical Park Rendezvous on June 19-21 in Burwell and see fur trader reenactors with their muzzleloaders.
