22 Nebraskaland • August-September 2026 A Wilson's phalarope swims at Fort Robinson State Park. Phalaropes swim in circles to create a whirlpool that drives invertebrates to the water's surface. A lesser yellowlegs wades for food at Box Butte Wildlife Management Area. Its bill is straighter and proportionally shorter than that of the greater yellowlegs. The diminutive semipalmated plover walks on a sandbar at Kiowa Wildlife Management Area.
