N
ebraskans understand the
importance of having a solid
offense when it comes to football,
volleyball and baseball. This theory
applies to outdoor education as well.
As we face the fact that each new
generation pulls in fewer hunters and
outdoorsmen and women than the
previous generation, we must try to
preserve our hunting heritage.
The most effective way to fight this
is by introducing young people to
the outdoors. Whether it is through
hiking, hunting, fishing, birdwatching,
archery, or a simple walk on a trail, we
must actively engage young people in
outdoor activities.
Nebraska Safari Club International
strives to develop programs that
promote outdoor education along with
preserving our hunting legacy. On June
9 the organization held its first annual
"Take a Kid Outside" event at Pheasant
Bonanza Hunt Club and Kennels.
While at the event, young people were
engaged in fishing, archery (thanks to
the Prairie Bowmen), dog retrieving
and exhibition shooting.
Not without irony, the volunteers had
more fun than the kids, or so it seemed!
Young people were eager to tell their
fishing tales as each child caught a fish.
The youngsters had an equal amount
of enthusiasm working with the
retrieving
dogs and were
enthralled with
the shooting
exhibition.
Our fight to
build our hunting
community can
be won by taking
interest in our
young people.
If you would
like to be part
of a dynamic
organization that
promotes youth
hunting and
outdoor education,
please consider joining Safari Club
International and/or attending a local
chapter event.
