July 2020 • Nebraskaland 31 What To Do in July Go boating at Lewis and Clark State Recreation Area Throughout the month Nebraska's second largest lake, Lewis and Clark Lake is popular for boating. The lake has lots of access points, is typically calm and large enough that you can usually escape the crowds. Boating opportunities don't stop at Lewis and Clark; the lake also off ers access to the Missouri River. Look for monarch caterpillars Throughout the month | Statewide Monarchs hatched in late July will make the 1,500-mile journey to Mexico in September and October. View them as caterpillars by searching for milkweed in prairies, meadows, roadside ditches and grasslands. If you don't see caterpillars, don't get discouraged; you can still appreciate all the other species that use milkweed – on average there are about seven of them at all times on a milkweed plant. Anglers should have good luck at Sherman Reservoir; according to sampling reports, it's one of the best white bass fi sheries this year. The area also off ers boating, picnicking and several miles of hiking trails.
